BASIC ALGEBRA

Absolute value describes the distance of a number on the number line from 0 without considering which direction from 0 the number lies. The absolute value of a number is never negative.

Example:

The absolute value of -9 is 9
The absolute value of 3 is 3
The absolute value of 0 is 0
The absolute value of -156 is 156

Example 2: Solve |2x − 17| = 3 for x.
Solution:
|2x − 17| = 3. Then, we have 2x − 17 = ±3 which implies x = 10 or x = 7.
